History
Elmer Keith's heavy .44 Special handloads convinced Smith & Wesson and Remington to standardize the .44 Remington Magnum in 1955-56, launched in the S&W Model 29. Dirty Harry made it a household name in 1971 as 'the most powerful handgun in the world,' a title it has long since ceded. It remains the benchmark handgun hunting cartridge.
