Night vision, explained honestly

Why it costs what it costs, what the specs mean, and where the money actually goes.

The single biggest capability jump in the hobby

Nothing else you can buy changes what you can do like analog night vision does — and nothing else costs like it. A capable single-tube setup is a used-car purchase; duals are a nicer used car. This guide is here so you spend that money once, correctly, or decide honestly not to.

Analog tubes vs. digital

Analog image intensifier tubes amplify existing light tens of thousands of times, in real time, with no lag. That is the technology behind every serious NVG.

Digital night vision is a low-light camera and a screen. It is dramatically cheaper, fine for spotting from a fixed position, and improving fast — but latency, resolution, and low-light floor still separate it from tubes when you are moving with it on your face.

Reading a tube spec sheet

Three numbers do most of the talking:

  • FOM (figure of merit) = resolution x signal-to-noise. Mid-1000s is workable; 2000+ is the modern "good tube" line. Diminishing returns are real above that.
  • Autogating: the tube rapidly modulates power around bright light sources — street lamps, muzzle flash — protecting the tube and your picture. Worth having.
  • White phosphor vs. green: contrast preference, not capability. Most people find white easier on the eyes over hours; nobody ever lost a fight over the color.

One tube or two

A single PVS-14 is the classic entry: one eye amplified, one eye natural, cheapest path to real capability, and it teaches you 90% of the skill. Duals add depth perception and comfort for long sessions and movement — for roughly double the money. Nobody needs duals before they have owned a single.

The parts nobody budgets for

The tube is half the bill. The other half: a real ballistic or bump helmet that fits, a shroud and mount that do not wobble, a counterweight so your neck survives, and an IR illuminator or laser if your use case calls for one.

On IR lasers: full-power military units are eye-hazard devices with real liability attached; civilian-legal low-power versions exist for a reason. Treat every IR laser as a laser first and an accessory second.

Thermal is a different tool

Thermal imagers see heat, not light — unbeatable for detection (a warm body against a cold field glows), poor for identification and navigation. Hunters detect with thermal and identify with NV or a light. They complement each other; neither replaces the other.
