Winchester necked the .30-06 down to .277 caliber in 1925 for the Model 54 rifle. Outdoor writer Jack O'Connor spent decades championing it as the ideal Western hunting cartridge, and generations of hunters agreed. A century later it remains a top-five American big-game seller.
