6.8 SPC (Remington Special Purpose Cartridge)
The hog hunter's AR cartridge — did its job well, but the ARC generation is quietly writing its retirement papers.
Family
Rifle
Introduced
2004
Origin
Remington with US Army Marksmanship Unit, USA
History
Developed in the early 2000s by Remington and the Army Marksmanship Unit with special-operations input, the 6.8 SPC sought better terminal performance than 5.56 from the M4 platform. Military adoption never came, and an early chamber-spec stumble (fixed by SPC II) hurt its commercial run. It settled into a solid niche as a hog and deer cartridge for AR-15s.
What it's used for
Iconic platforms
AR-15s with SPC II chambers and 6.8 magazines, plus a handful of bolt and single-shot rifles.
