The legality questions worth asking before you buy

Why this page exists

Most gear in our catalog is just... stuff. Pouches, boots, optics, helmets — buy freely. But a handful of categories carry real legal edges that catch normal people by surprise, and we would rather flag the questions than let you discover them the hard way.

Body armor

• Federal: possession is generally legal for adults — but a felony conviction makes it a federal crime.
• State: a few states regulate purchase channels or add restrictions and penalties. Check yours before ordering.

Night vision and thermal

• Owning and using NV/thermal domestically is generally unrestricted federally.
• EXPORT is the trap: image-intensifier and thermal technology is controlled (ITAR/EAR). Carrying your NVG abroad, or selling to a non-US person — even at home, even used — can be a serious federal offense.
• Hunting with NV or thermal is regulated per state and per species. What is fine for hogs in one state is a violation for deer in the next.

Lasers and lights

• Full-power IR lasers sold to military/LE are eye-hazard devices; the civilian market versions run reduced power for a reason. Know which one you are holding.
• Nothing about a white weapon light is restricted — but where you point a gun to use it is governed by the same laws as pointing the gun.

The pattern to internalize

Gear law rarely lives where people expect (buying) and often lives where they do not (crossing state lines, crossing borders, selling, hunting use, and who is prohibited from possessing). When in doubt, the questions to ask are: is this restricted in MY state, can I travel with it, and can I resell it — and the answers need to come from current law, not a forum thread. We flag `export-controlled` and `state-variance` items in the catalog where we know about them.
