Bump or ballistic

A bump helmet protects you from rails, door frames, and gravity — not bullets. It is light, cheap, and for most civilian night-shooting use, honestly correct. A ballistic helmet adds IIIA-rated protection and roughly triples the weight and price. Buy for your actual use, not the fantasy.

Why every modern lid is "high-cut"

The high-cut (above-the-ear) shape exists for one reason: headsets. Ear pro and comms cups need the real estate the old full-cut PASGT shape occupied. Rails on the sides carry lights and strobes; the front shroud is the anchor for everything night vision.

The mounting chain

Night vision hangs off four parts, in order — and the chain is only as good as its wobbliest link:

• Shroud — the socket bolted to the helmet front (Wilcox 3-hole pattern is the standard).
• Mount — the articulating arm: Wilcox G24/RAID or Norotos TATM/Lo-Sto. Flip-up, breakaway, adjustment in every axis.
• Dovetail or bayonet interface — how the device clicks into the mount. NVG horns/dovetails must match the mount's jaw.
• The device — monocular, binos, or fusion. Behind it all: a counterweight pouch on the rear, or your neck files a complaint by hour two.

The wobble tax

Cheap mounts wobble, and a wobbling image at 1x amplification is seasickness. This is why a $400 mount under a $4,000 tube is not overkill — it's the suspension for the most expensive thing you own. Spend real money on the mount before upgrading the tube.

Setup order that works

• Fit the helmet properly first (pads/dial, level, stable when you shake).
• Mount NVG, then add the counterweight until it balances.
• Route comms and strobe last, cables under keepers.
• Then wear the whole system for an hour at home. Every discomfort you find on the couch is one you won't find in the field.
