IR lasers and illuminators, aimed responsibly
How aiming under night vision actually works, what the power classes mean, and the discipline of invisible light.

IR lasers are eye-hazard devices you cannot see and don't blink at — treat every one as loaded. Power classes and sales restrictions exist for eye safety; nothing here covers modifying or defeating them, and nothing here is legal advice. Why lasers run the night
With a helmet-mounted tube over your eye, you can't get behind a rifle scope the way you do in daylight — your eye is busy. The night-vision answer is to move the aiming point onto the target: an IR laser on the rail projects a dot only your tube can see, so you aim from any head position, both eyes doing their jobs. That's the entire trick, and it's why a laser is the standard partner to a PVS-14, not an accessory.
Illuminators: the flashlight half
An I2 tube amplifies light; on a moonless overcast night, under tree canopy, or inside a structure, there may not be enough to amplify. An IR illuminator is simply a flashlight in a wavelength only night vision sees — it floods shadows and makes the tube's picture usable where ambient light fails. Most serious units combine laser and illuminator in one box, and the illuminator half gets used far more than beginners expect.
Power classes, in plain words
Laser power is regulated by class, and the classes are about one thing: what the beam does to a human eye. Low classes (Class 1, Class 3R territory) are the civilian-legal tier — enough output to aim with at practical distances, kept under the threshold where a brief exposure injures. Full-power military units put out many times more energy, reach dramatically farther — and can cause permanent eye damage in an instant, which is exactly why their sale is restricted to military and law enforcement.
The part that makes IR uniquely dangerous: the beam is invisible, so there is no blink reflex, no aversion response, nothing telling you an eye is being injured. That's why the restriction exists, and why the civilian versions are the correct tool, not the consolation prize. Know which class you're holding, and never point any laser at a person's eyes, an aircraft, or anything you haven't identified.
Zeroing, the short version
A laser is a sight, and an unzeroed sight is a decoration. The basics: mount it solidly, zero at a known distance on paper with your NV on, and account for the offset — the laser sits beside or above the bore, so the beam and the bullet's path cross rather than overlap. Pick the convention your training source teaches (converging zero or parallel offset), write down your zero distance, and confirm it after any bump or remount, same as any optic. Ten unhurried minutes on a range with a safe backstop; that's the whole ritual.
Passive aiming: the quieter option
The alternative to a laser is passive aiming: looking through a night-vision-compatible red dot with your tube, no beam emitted at all. It costs you speed and comfortable head position; it buys you emitting nothing. Most experienced shooters treat it as the default and the laser as the tool for when passive won't work — awkward positions, speed, or coordinating with someone else's view.
The discipline of light
The rule that takes longest to internalize: invisible to YOU is not invisible.
- Anyone else wearing night vision sees your laser as a bright line pointing back at its source, and your illuminator as a lighthouse. In any two-sided context, active IR is a signature.
- Lowest power that does the job, momentary activation over constant-on, illuminator only when ambient light actually fails.
- Muzzle discipline applies to the beam: lasing something means pointing a rifle at it. The laser never becomes a pointer, a toy, or a way to "look at" things.
- Cameras see IR too — most phone and security cameras render your "invisible" beam just fine.
- Hunting with IR gear is regulated by state and species, same as night vision itself — check your state's current rules, not a forum thread.
