Optics, from red dots to LPVOs
What each optic type is actually for, the specs that matter, and the ones that are marketing.

The four families
Almost everything on a rail is one of these:
- Red dots — an LED reflected off glass. Zero magnification, unlimited eye relief, years of battery. The default for speed inside ~200 yards.
- Holographic sights (EOTech) — a laser-drawn reticle that stays crisp under magnifiers and behaves better with astigmatism for some eyes. Trades battery life for it.
- Prism optics — fixed low magnification with an etched reticle that works even with a dead battery. The astigmatism-friendly answer.
- LPVOs — 1-6x or 1-10x variable scopes. One optic that does close and mid-range, at the cost of weight, eye-relief fussiness, and money.
Dot size, and what MOA actually means
MOA (minute of angle) is just an angle: 1 MOA is about 1 inch at 100 yards. A 2 MOA dot covers 2 inches of target at 100 — precise but slower to find; a 6 MOA dot is fast up close but coarse at distance. Pistol dots run big (3-6 MOA), rifle dots small (1-2 MOA).
Mrad is the metric flavor of the same idea (0.1 mrad ≈ 1 cm at 100 m). Neither is better; just don't mix your turrets and your reticle.
The magnifier question
A flip-to-side 3x behind a dot or holo gets you honest mid-range identification without giving up close speed. It is also weight on the rail you'll swing 500 times per range day. The honest test: if you shoot past 100 regularly, it earns its slot; if not, it's jewelry.
Footprints — the compatibility trap
Pistol optics mount to specific cut patterns: RMR footprint, DeltaPoint Pro, Aimpoint ACRO, Holosun K. A slide milled for one does not take another without a plate. Check the footprint before you buy the dot — it is the #1 mismatch we see.
Where the money goes
Past ~$300 you are buying durability and dependable zero, not a prettier dot. The $500 duty-grade names hold zero through drops and live on hard-use guns for years. The $80 dot works until the day it doesn't — fine for a .22, a gamble on a defensive gun.

Not directly — different footprint. You need the right cut or an adapter plate. Check footprint before buying the dot.
What are you actually paying for past $300?▸
Durability and zero retention — surviving drops and recoil for years. Not a prettier reticle.
