The US issued the grid-print desert night parka and trousers in the early 1980s, designed to scatter the image in Soviet first-generation night-vision devices. Improving NVG technology made it obsolete almost immediately, and it was withdrawn in the 1990s. Cheap surplus later made it a cult item in streetwear and the gear hobby.
