History
Issued from 1942, the reversible five-color frogskin was the US's first mass-issued camouflage uniform, worn by Marine units across the Pacific from Tarawa onward. A limited Army issue in Normandy was withdrawn after friendly-fire concerns, since camouflage uniforms in that theater were associated with enemy troops. Retired after the war, surplus stocks resurfaced with irregular forces in the 1950s and 60s and seeded the commercial duck hunter family.
In the field
Worked in the Pacific's broken vegetation but was withdrawn in Europe, where any camouflage uniform risked being mistaken for the enemy's.
